April Monthly Option Expiration Week Historically Bullish: DJIA Up 33 of Last 40

April’s monthly option expiration is generally bullish across the board with solid gains on the last day of the week, the entire week and the week after. Since 1982, DJIA and S&P 500 have both advanced 26 times in 40 years on expiration day with an average gain just above 0.2%. Monthly expiration day appears to be staging a comeback after four or five declines from 2014 to 2018. Expiration week has a bullish track record over the past 40 years. Average weekly gains are 1% or better for S&P 500, DJIA and NASDAQ. The bullish bias of April monthly expiration also persists during the week after although average gains have not been as strong with selling pressure rising recently (since 2014).
